Regolith Excavation Challenge '08 is an Inventor's Wonderland
The photos below are from Primalmedia's Photographer Noah Munnerlyn who captured several excavators on camera. The first is
the Cal Poly/Slobotics excavator in the sandbox with the JSC-1A simulant at the recent 2008 Regolith Excavation Challenge on
August 2-3, 2008. Note the whiskers at the base of the vehicle used to navigate the surface. The second shot is an excavator
stirring up the simulant. The third photo is a team shot of Colorado School of Mines LunOreDiggers with their excavator.

2008 REGOLITH EXCAVATION CHALLENGE IS GOLDMINE FOR MEDIA STORIES
The lunar excavation competition draws innovators from all across North America
The 2008 Regolith Excavation Challenge was an exciting event this year with 25 teams registered, 16 teams attending the event at
California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly), and 8 teams competing in the challenge. The NASA prize proved elusive this year
as teams watched their autonomous excavators struggling to navigate around rocks on the simulant surface. Numerous media entities
covered the event including Flight 33 Productions (Discovery Channel), LAUNCH Magazine, Planetary Society Radio, The Space Show, The
Santa Maria Times, MSNBC, San Luis Obispo Tribune, Crewestone Technologies for NIA and NASA, KSBY-TV, KCOY-TV, La Opinion Newspaper of
Los Angeles (the second largest spanish-speaking publication in the U.S.), Celestial Mechanics, Ken Brown Aerospace Photojournalism,
Strike TV online, Pacific Coast Business Times, Primalmedia, and more.
High marks were given by the media for the comprehensive and compact 2008 Regolith Media Packet 2.0 and the final version, 2.1,
distributed to reporters and journalists. The packet contained an overview, main facts, authorized quotes from major parties involved
in the event, recommended sources, story angles, and visitor/reporter information on lodging, transporation, etc. in the area. A sample
